Maye Musk
Her name is Maye — Maye Haldeman, later Maye Musk — not May. She is a model, a registered dietitian, and the mother of Elon, Kimbal, and Tosca. She is also the reason there is a Canadian passport in this story, and the person who kept three children fed while building two careers that did not require anyone's permission.

The Haldeman line
She was born 19 April 1948 in Regina, Saskatchewan, a twin, one of five. Her parents, Wyn Fletcher and Joshua N. Haldeman, were the restless kind: a dance instructor and a chiropractor-aviator who moved the family to Pretoria in 1950 and flew a prop plane around the world in 1952. For years they hunted the fabled Lost City of the Kalahari and came home with slide shows. Maye was working by eight — newsletters, stamps, then the reception desk at her father's clinic.
That is the inheritance she actually handed down: you work, you leave, you make a plan. She named her first child after her American grandfather, John Elon Haldeman.
Two jobs, three children, one plan
She started modeling at fifteen. People told her it would be over at eighteen. She was a 1969 Miss South Africa finalist, took a B.Sc. in dietetics from the University of Pretoria, and married her high-school classmate Errol Musk in 1970. Elon arrived in 1971, then Kimbal, then Tosca. The marriage ended in 1979.
As a single parent she could not afford the encyclopedia and the computer. Elon, about ten, went to live with his father for those. She has been dry about it in public. She kept modeling. She practiced dietetics out of the house and put the children on clerical duty, the same way she had been put to work. She earned a master's in dietetics in Afrikaans at the University of the Orange Free State, later a second master's in nutritional science at the University of Toronto, and in 2023 an honorary doctorate of dietetics from the University of the Free State.
In 1989, after Elon had already gone north, she moved to Canada with Tosca. She rebuilt the dietetics practice. She kept booking jobs. She has said, to Forbes, that her greatest achievement was "having three great kids and surviving."

Maye did not become famous because her son did. She was, as she has quoted her friends saying, famous first.
